Transformers Magazine cordially invites all interested parties including academic researchers, professional engineers, electrical utilities and consultants, as well as component and material manufacturers to take part in our Special Edition issue focusing on machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Three core concepts, decarbonization, decentralization, and deregulation encapsule the clean energy transition for the power industry. Keeping a strict vigil on the cost during this process is an imperative for power companies.
Smart grids are facilitating agile business models that respond to such challenges within the emerging markets, but it also leads to a surge in data generation and accumulation. With proper analysis, this data can significantly secure and improve the grid performance and resolve various customer demands As suggested by our readers and editors, the November 2022 Special Edition is dedicated to:
- machine learning,
- artificial intelligence, and
- industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) refers to various software-based systems that use data inputs to make decisions based on various training methods. AI-driven smart grid tools should help power industry to avoid costly downtime, enhance asset optimization, control and operation of power systems, customer segmentation and even diagnostics.
For example, suitable AI/ML driven algorithms can identify / classify potential faults and provide early warning. ML-driven tools can help in highlighting assets with highest intervention and resource allocation needs on a well-defined timescale. This allows an asset manager to justify his findings techno-economically and plan the maintenance schedules well-ahead in time.
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) refers to using network-connected devices and applications to automate, optimize, and manage industrial processes like manufacturing, transportation, and utility management.
Market forecasts suggest that the entire AI value chain in the power industry will reach about $5.3 bn by 2024. Large utilities are investing more in vital resources such as machine learning and data science to improve their in-house capabilities.
While AI technologies do have a promising future in the power industry, there are a few unaddressed challenges such as testing, deployability, scalability, transparency, and affordability and cyber security.
This special edition of Transformers Magazine aims to shed light on these aspects and contribute to a better understanding of the requirements and available solutions.
