USA, Indiana: A series of small underground transformer explosions occurred in downtown Indianapolis causing brownish-gray smoke on the streets.

The explosions started about 1:30 p.m. outside the Circle Centre shopping and entertainment mall forcing evacuations from the buildings but no one was injured, reports Journal Gazette.

Bruce Plott, a construction worker, said he heard what sounded like someone banging on aluminum garbage cans. “It went on for almost 10 minutes.” Plott told WIBC-FM.

Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL) issued a statement saying a network protector failed in an underground vault holding four transformers. IPL cut power to a portion of the mall while the failure was investigated.
