US-based Sentry Depressurization Systems is tapping into Indian power sector with transformer safety systems SentryDS which prevent transformer fires at public places such as cinemas and shopping malls.
The company is already selling its transformer safety systems in India and it now intends to set up a manufacturing facility for the Depressurization Systems in Bangalore, hoping to gain 30 – 40 % of its global revenues from Indian market.
The safety system technology is suitable for all transformers from 15 MVA onwards, especially oil-filled transformers, which are at high risk of catching fire or blast due to overload or over usage.
“The technology is unique in itself. It prevents the transformers from catching fire or blasting. We are very optimistic about Indian market and plan to set up manufacturing facility here to cater to the Indian market,” Chairman of Sentry Depressurization Systems, Jeffery Berkowitz, told Business Line, India.
Berkowitz said that the current protective devices, such as circuit breakers, Buchholz relay, sudden pressure relay, gas monitoring and pressure relief valve, react too slow when a rupture takes place in the tank of oil-filled transformers. The rupture occurs within 12 milliseconds when the overload causes pressure build-up and fast acting Sentry Depressurization Systems open at 5.1 milliseconds before the static pressure can develop, according to M S R Rao, head for Asia-Pacific at Sentry Depressurization Systems. “We will have a manufacturing unit near Bangalore. However, the plan is still at the initial stage, hence the investment outlay has not yet been decided,” Rao said.
