Kenya Power loses KES 11 million ($ 127,000) to transformer vandalism
Kenya: Kenya Power Company has lost Sh 11 million ($ 127 million) worth of power transformers in Mt Kenya region in the last six months. According to Kenya Power Mt Kenya regional manager David Mwaniki, more than 60 power transformers have been vandalised since July last year.

Kenya: Kenya Power Company has lost KES 11 million ($ 127,000) worth of power transformers in Mt Kenya region in the last six months. According to Kenya Power Mt Kenya regional manager David Mwaniki, more than 60 power transformers have been vandalised since July last year.
Mr Mwaniki said the high demand for copper wire in the black market is the main cause of rise in vandalism. Many urban areas are affected as vandalisers first switch the power off.
“This is a big loss to the company and even the people since it has affected the region’s economy,” Mwaniki said. He called upon Parliament ensure that those arrested get harsher penalties.
Power transformers are now being welded and put at homesteads for extra safety. The community is urged to help the police in their efforts to put an end to vandalism.
