Australia, New South Wales: The federal government of Australia has given the permission for a large transmission infrastructure project in New South Wales. The project will enable the deployment of at least 4.5 GW of renewables capacity in the state. Federal environment minister Tanya Plibersek issued the approval on Thursday, about a month after the granting of planning approval by the NSW government. Both permits contain conditions related to the protection of nature.

The Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) transmission project involves installing around 240 km (149.1 mi) of new lines within the REZ to help connect large-scale renewable and energy storage facilities to the national grid. It is expected that this will drive up to AU$20 billion (US$13.12 billion) in private investment in solar, wind and energy storage projects and help power roughly 1.8 million New South Wales homes.

The project will be executed with about AU$490 million in federal funding under the government’s Rewiring the Nation Fund, with financial close planned to be reached in the second half of the year. Building works should begin in late 2024. Operation of the new lines is scheduled to begin in 2028.
