India, Chennai: Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) will conduct modernisation of the old transformers in the city as they hinder the pedestrians because of their size. The old transformers will soon be replaced by small compact transformers.

Tangedco’s proposal is to replace many of the old 11 kV distribution transformers with Ring Main Units (RMUs) that are modern, compact and safe. The current distribution transformers are located on footpaths and occupy a lot of space. They also pose a risk to the public during sudden power surges.

A Tangedco official explained that the distribution network efficiency would be improved and transformer faults would be minimised after installation of the RMUs. The RMUs will be linked to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) centre and constantly monitored. RMUs are also safer than the current transformers. If a surge occurrs, the RMU will automatically trip, and will have to be reset.

According to Tangedco official, a proposal for installation of a total of 3,283 RMUs has been made. The units are to be installed under the Centre-assisted Restructure Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (RAPDRP).
