FGC implements project involving transformer heat recovery technology

Russia, Nizhny Novgorod: Federal Grid Company (FGC) summed up the implementation of the pilot project to improve the efficiency of the substations.

During 2013, experts at MES Volga branch evaluated the work of heat recovery systems and cooling control of autotransformers at the 500 kV Nizhny Novgorod substation, reports Energy Land.

FGC’s project involves using heat from power transformers to heat the space in the substation and it is the first of the kind in Russia. The tests have shown that with the help of this technology, a significant reduction was achieved in power consumption of the station.  

Heating costs of the substation account for about 15 % of total consumption for own needs (up to 150 million kWh/year). Application of transformer heat recovery technology would cover up to 100 % of the necessary heating costs for the substation and significantly reduce energy consumption for cooling transformers in the winter.

The project is based on heat recovery – the use of heat loss from transformers and autotransformers, which amount to hundreds of kilowatts. The developed system makes use of the transformer oil heat for heating buildings. Transformer oil temperature is 15-20°C in the winter. Using it allows heat to maintain the temperature in the heating system at 50°C, which provides heating for the building even if air temperature drops to -27°C.

The obtained results have shown their effectiveness and the need for further development.
