New Zealand, Bluff: A power transformer has been delivered to the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters plant at Tiwai Point.
The transformer weighs 160 tonnes and was shipped from Hyosung in South Korea. It is part of an $ 8 million capital project to replace the reduction lines standby transformer, reports The Southland Times.
According to the NZAS site electrical engineer Ken Bolger, the transformer will take one month to rebuild and it will replace the original standby transformer, which has been operating for 45 years. The transformer will be used when any of the other four reduction line transformers need maintenance, so there is no loss of production.
The transformer was part of the $ 70 million capital spending halt in 2102, which was approved for restart following renegotiation of the power agreement.
