Avangrid to invest $41 M in Ithaca grid
$41 M will fund new substations and transmission lines, supporting 42,000 NYSEG customers and advancing a $20 B Northeast grid upgrade plan through 2030.

USA, New York, Ithaca: Avangrid, Inc., a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has announced a $41 M investment to enhance the power infrastructure in Ithaca, New York. The initiative includes the construction of three substations and 35 km (22 mi) of transmission lines, aiming to improve grid reliability and capacity for over 42,000 NYSEG customers in the area.
The project builds on Avangrid’s broader Reliable Energy NY Rate Plan, which has already funneled over $500 M into 265 electric and gas infrastructure projects statewide since 2023. As part of its long-term strategy, the company plans to invest $20 B across the Northeast through 2030.
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the first phase will include transformer and capacitor bank upgrades across five substations – Coddington, Fourth Street, Trumansburg, Cayuga Heights, and West Hill. These upgrades aim to reduce outages, enhance system performance, and support regional growth. In total, the work is expected to create over 150 jobs.
CEO Pedro Azagra highlighted the investment as a commitment to strengthening aging infrastructure, while NYSEG and RG&E President Patricia Nilsen emphasized its role in enabling community and business expansion.
Since 2023, Avangrid has invested $582 M across New York to reinforce safe and reliable energy delivery to 2.9 million customers.
