USA, New Jersey: The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on Tuesday has greenlit the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for the Atlantic Shores South Offshore Wind Projects 1 and 2, which will be installed in waters off New Jersey. The projects, together known as Atlantic Shores South, will have a power generation capacity of 2.8 GW.
This approval represented the final hurdle in the permitting process that needed to be cleared before construction could be launched. It follows the issue of a record of decision (ROD) from the Department of the Interior (DOI) in July.
The COP was cleared with locations for 197 wind turbine generators, offshore substations, and a meteorological tower, with subsea transmission cables potentially making landfall in Atlantic City and Sea Girt. BOEM’s approval considers feedback from tribes, government agencies, ocean users and other interested parties.
The projects were proposed by Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind LLC, a joint venture between Shell New Energies US LLC and a subsidiary of EDF Renewables North America. After the ROD issue, the original 102124-acre (41343-ha) lease for the scheme was split into two separate ones, located roughly 8.7 miles off New Jersey at its nearest point. Once commissioned, the wind projects will generate electricity equal to the annual power consumption of one million homes.
