EU/Mongolia: The government of Mongolia has sealed a deal to receive grant financing from the European Union (EU) to partly fund the construction of new transmission infrastructure. The EU is providing a €8.4 million ($9.2 million) grant for the Choir-Sainshand Transmission Line Project as part of a €79.7 million funding package dedicated to Mongolia’s energy infrastructure.
Apart from the grant, the package includes a €64.6 million debt facility from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and an additional €6.7 million in technical assistance from donors including Japan. The funds will help the construction of a 220 kV line running for 220 km between Choir and Sainshand, and also substations in the two cities. Construction works on the project are expected to begin next year, while the goal is to energize the line in 2027.
The line could boost the interconnection capacity of Mongolia’s transmission network and reduce transmission losses. It us also set to enable the deployment of additional renewable energy capacity.
