Thailand / Norway / UK: The first of two offshore converter station topsides for the Hornsea 3 wind farm in the UK has set sail from Map Ta Phut, Thailand, on its way to Europe. The topside, completed by Ørsted’s Thailand-based team alongside Aibel and Hitachi Energy, will embark on a 55-day journey covering over 13,000 nautical miles to Haugesund, Norway. There, it will undergo installation and commissioning of high-voltage equipment.
The structure will be transported aboard the heavy-lift vessel BigLift Barentsz.
This marks a significant milestone for the project, as noted by Luke Bridgman, Managing Director of Hornsea 3. He emphasized that the sailaway represents three years of hard work and collaboration between teams in Europe and Thailand, bringing the world’s largest offshore wind farm closer to completion.
In 2022, Ørsted signed a contract with Aibel and Hitachi Energy to deliver two offshore converter stations. Aibel handles the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation, while Hitachi Energy supplies the HVDC Light converter systems and Aibel delivers the platforms.
This marks a key moment in the journey toward realizing Hornsea 3, a project poised to make a significant impact in renewable energy generation.
