USA, Florida: Florida Power & Light Co. has implemented an emergency response plan in anticipation of large-scale power outages in Florida from Hurricane Milton. It warned that utility workers from other companies who otherwise would be available to help FPL in storm recovery efforts in Florida are working in other states affected by Hurricane Helene.
“Thousands of resources are responding to the dire situation in the Southeast US following Hurricane Helene. While that’s exactly where they should be, it could impact the resources available from utilities that typically support Florida,” the company said in a statement.
FPL is “marshalling as many resources as it can into Florida to mitigate those impacts, which includes bringing in line-workers from as far away as the Western US”. The company is urging customers to review their personal and business emergency plans and prepare for possible extended power outages. Meanwhile, FPL is pre-positioning the company’s restoration workforce for rapid restoration and coordinating with state and county emergency operations centers.
In a statement, FPL President and CEO Armando Pimentel said: “We are finalizing our preparations and implore customers to do the same. In the meantime, customers should heed evacuation orders from emergency officials, be prepared for potential outages and make sure they are keeping safety their top priority.”
FPL advises its customers to not trim trees, to follow the advice of federal, state, and local authorities, and warned that its customers dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment should finalize their family emergency plan for backup power.
