Germany, Berlin: The German power grid is in need of a significant expansion and modernisation which would enable the integration of new producers and consumers such as renewable energy plants, storage systems, heat pumps, data centres and charging stations, according to a new analysis. The study commissioned by the Federal Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) and German Electro and Digital Industry Association (ZVEI) found that over 500000 km of cables in the low-voltage network are necessary by 2045.

Approximately 500000 transformers for converting from medium to low voltage are also needed, representing nearly 80% of the current stock. Germany must also construct, upgrade or replace over 5000 transformers for converting from high to medium voltage, about 70% of the stock.

Modernisation is required as many network components have reached the end of their service life, while the power grid is increasingly strained by the green transformation and the growing share of renewable energy. The upgrade will require significant investments and collaboration between all stakeholders.
