USA: Drew Baglino, former senior vice president at Tesla, is launching a new venture, Heron Power, focused on reinventing the transformer. The startup is raising between $30 M and $50 M in Series A funding, with Capricorn Investment Group set to lead the round.

Baglino, who joined Tesla in 2006, played a key role in designing the Model S powertrain and leading the company’s battery storage initiatives. After leaving Tesla in April 2024, Baglino turned his attention to an often-overlooked part of the electrical grid: transformers, which have remained largely unchanged for over a century.

Heron Power is developing solid-state transformers, offering advantages over traditional models, including enhanced voltage regulation, particularly for renewable energy sources like solar and wind. These transformers are more compact, can quickly transition between power sources, and can be actively managed to improve grid stability.

Heron Power joins other startups like Amperesand, based in Singapore, in aiming to disrupt the transformer market, with many of these ventures led by Tesla alumni.
