Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby: To address increasing electricity demands in the National Capital District, Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH) has delivered two new power transformers to PNG Power Ltd. Valued at $1 M (K4.2 M), the ABB-manufactured transformers will be installed at the Bomana and Kanudi substations in Port Moresby, aiming to ease the load on the Konedobu, Waigani, and Moitaka substations.
KCH Managing Director Professor David Kavanamur emphasised that the transformers represent a vital investment to improve grid reliability but stressed that long-term stability requires sustained attention to infrastructure management. “PNG Power must now prioritise consistent maintenance and strong asset management systems,” he said.
The procurement was made possible through $2.6 M (K11 M) in funding under the Government’s PNG Power recovery programme. Kavanamur noted that the new equipment marks a significant step in restoring confidence in the city’s power supply and reinforcing the backbone of its energy infrastructure.
PNG Power CEO Paul Bayly confirmed that the transformers are expected to be commissioned and operational by the next week. “Our infrastructure is undoubtedly under pressure, but this support from KCH brings much-needed resilience to the network,” he said. “These transformers will play a key role in ensuring a more reliable power supply for our customers.”
