India, Kochi: As summer heats up, Kerala is on the brink of a power crisis. With daily consumption hovering around 100 GWh, demand is expected to surge in April and May, leading to widespread disruptions.

In May last year, daily power consumption hit a record high of 115 GWh. In April 2024, many days saw usage levels ranging between 110-113 GWh. As temperatures rise, the growing use of air conditioners is driving up electricity demand during peak hours.

Hundreds of transformers blew out across the state last year. To address the issue, Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd. (KSEB) planned to procure around 1,500 transformers in March and another 1,000 in April 2025. However, procurement of the transformers has been delayed until May due to delays in the tender process.

By that time, the crisis may worsen. “We have started measures for floating tenders for procuring transformers. We have asked the officials to expedite the process,” said electricity minister K. Krishnankutty.

Senior KSEB officials are relying on summer showers for relief.
