Croatia, Zagreb: Croatian electrical company Končar – Elektorindustrija said Končar – Power Transformers, its joint venture with Germany’s Siemens Energy, finalised testing of the first of two 120 MVA 380 kV transformers, engineered for grid stabilisation, in October. The transformers facilitate bidirectional energy transfer between battery systems and the power grid.
The first transformer is set to be installed in a battery system in northern Germany, while the second, still under production, will be deployed in southern Germany. Both sites were strategically selected by Siemens Energy to optimise the Ultrastack battery system, aiding grid expansion and alleviating bottlenecks from the north-south transmission of wind power.
The pilot projects, totalling 700 MW in capacity, are spearheaded by the four German transmission system operators as part of an initiative to reach 54.5 GW by 2045. The transformers meet strict noise limits of 80 dB under nominal load, with added acoustic shielding for noise reduction. Worker safety and maintenance efficiency are ensured through accessible platforms, oil containment guides, fall protection, shock prevention, and features simplifying inspections and servicing.
