South Korea: HD Hyundai Electric has successfully completed the final approval test for its 230 kV 653 MVA phase shifting transformer (PST), the largest of its kind in Korea. The transformer will be delivered by August 2025 to a New York wind farm under construction by Invenergy, the largest renewable energy company in the United States.

Phase shifting transformers regulate current flow between power grids, ensuring grid stability and efficient energy transmission, especially when integrating DC-based renewables with AC-based systems. Transformers with a capacity exceeding 300 MVA are classified as large-scale, making Hyundai’s 653 MVA unit a record-breaker in domestic production.

With global demand for special transformers rising, particularly in the US and Europe, the market is projected to nearly double to $4.8 B by 2033. A company representative emphasised Hyundai’s focus on high-value transformer markets, leveraging advanced technology in insulation, cooling, and mechanical strength to stay ahead in this growing sector.
