Morocco: Morocco and Mauritania have signed an agreement to connect their electricity networks. Morocco’s National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) announced the agreement after the Director General Tarik Hamane and his counterpart from the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC), Sidi Salem Mohaned Elabd, finalised the deal in a ceremony.

Moroccan officials said that the connection project is a major step which will enhance the reliability of the two countries’ electricity grids. They added that the connection opens prospects for energy exchange between them and Europe and West Africa within the framework of the West African Energy Community.

Mauritania is ranked among the most expensive in electricity prices in the region and sims to reduce the cost by importing energy and securing some of its electricity needs through its connection with Morocco. It is expected to benefit from Morocco’s experience in electricity production as it seeks to produce 52% of its needs through renewable energy by 2030.
