Germany, Regensburg: On 28 May 2025, Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH (MR) acquired a minority interest in BSS Hochspannungstechnik GmbH (BSS), located in Sindelfingen, Baden-Württemberg. This move expands MR’s capabilities in partial discharge (PD) monitoring for transformers and gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).

Dr Martin Siegel will continue to lead BSS, maintaining its current direction in the development of PD monitoring systems.

As global energy demand increases, extended delivery times and rising equipment costs are creating new pressures on electrical infrastructure. Aging assets and a shortage of qualified personnel are accelerating the need for data-driven asset performance management (APM). PD monitoring, which provides insight into insulation conditions in GIS and transformers, is becoming a key tool in supporting system reliability.

Through this investment, MR plans to integrate BSS technologies into its Embedded Transformer Operating System (ETOS®), enabling faster deployment of monitoring systems in international markets.

Founded in 2013 by graduates from the University of Stuttgart, BSS focuses on developing sensors and systems for PD detection, particularly using ultra-high frequency (UHF) methods. The company will continue operating independently under its existing name, with a small team of specialists.

MR operates globally through 40 companies in 28 countries and employs nearly 5,000 people. It has long been involved in regulating electrical networks and continues to expand its focus on digital and monitoring technologies.
