UK: National Grid has unveiled early-stage proposals for a major new electricity transmission project stretching from Weston Marsh in Lincolnshire to East Leicestershire. The project aims to strengthen the UK’s grid infrastructure and support the country’s shift toward cleaner, locally produced energy.
As part of The Great Grid Upgrade – the most significant investment in the UK’s transmission network in a generation – the project includes around 60 km of new high-voltage overhead lines and two new substations near Corby Glen (Lincolnshire) and Wartnaby (Leicestershire). It also involves upgrading 55 km of existing line between East Leicestershire and Northamptonshire’s Grendon substation.
The new infrastructure will help transport electricity generated along Britain’s East Coast to homes and businesses in Lincolnshire, the Midlands, and beyond. It is expected to power up to six million homes, reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, and support long-term energy security and cost stability.
National Grid is inviting public input during an eight-week consultation running from 11 June to 6 August 2025. Residents can review the proposed route and substation locations, attend one of eight in-person events or five webinars, and submit their feedback.
Project Director Ben Muncey emphasised the importance of public involvement, saying, “This reinforcement between Weston Marsh and East Leicestershire is essential to meet the UK’s forecasted energy demand doubling by 2050. As our demand for electricity grows, this project will connect our homes, businesses and public services to sources of home-grown British energy, making us more energy independent.”
In line with government policy, local communities hosting the infrastructure could benefit from investment funds if the project receives planning approval.
