UK: UK Power Networks (UKPN) has completed a $4.2M (£3.2 M) upgrade at a substation near Wimbledon, installing a new 130 kV transformer that will serve over 250,000 residents. This new transformer is designed to provide higher emergency capacity without compromising its lifespan, ensuring a more reliable power supply.
The upgraded transformer can process up to 90 MVA under normal conditions. A key feature of the new transformer is its Continuous Emergency Rating, which allows it to handle higher currents in emergency situations while extending its operational life compared to the previous model.
Transporting the 102 t transformer to the site required a large-scale operation, with the equipment being delivered through residential areas of South London. The transformer will be energized and connected to the grid by the summer of 2025, ensuring that power is safely stepped down for local homes and businesses.
Tom Parminter, UK Power Networks’ programme manager, emphasized that this investment is part of the company’s commitment to future-proofing the local electricity network, helping to meet growing energy demands and support the transition to low-carbon technologies.
