The Netherlands: Prysmian has won the “Quick & Simple Substation” innovation contest, launched by Dutch power utilities Alliander, Enexis, and Stedin to accelerate the deployment of medium voltage substations across the Netherlands. Competing against 13 other providers, Prysmian’s plug-and-play solution was selected for its potential to simplify installation, reduce labor demands, and improve grid resilience.
The winning concept uses a prefabricated MV cable and plug connection, designed to be fast, technician-friendly, and scalable. As electricity demand grows and grid operators face a shortage of skilled labor, the solution offers a much-needed path to faster, safer, and more reliable substation installations.
The innovation is set to be implemented in the Netherlands, with the potential for global application. Utilities in Europe and beyond face similar challenges, and Prysmian’s solution offers a replicable model for future deployment.
“This is a clear example of technology and collaboration solving real-world infrastructure challenges,” said Angela Hulst, Innovation Manager at Stedin. Executives from all three utilities praised the cooperation and impact of the project, with Alliander’s Maartje Brans noting the connection time has already dropped from two days to one.
Prysmian’s win aligns with its long-term sustainability and innovation goals, targeting 55 % of revenues from sustainable products by 2028.
The solution was developed through international R&D collaboration across Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
