Romania, Mamaia: Retele Electrice Romania, a power distribution company under Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC), has finalised a major infrastructure project at the Black Sea resort of Mamaia. The newly built 110 / 20 kV transformer station, valued at $9.4 M (43 M lei), is designed to serve around 7,800 customers, addressing the seasonal spike in electricity demand during the tourist-heavy summer months.
The station’s integration into the grid was completed using fully underground cabling for both high and medium voltage connections, enhancing safety, aesthetics, and reliability.
According to Retele Electrice, this project is part of their ongoing efforts to modernise and strengthen the national electricity distribution network.
The company operates approximately 134,000 km of distribution lines across three key Romanian regions – Muntenia Sud (which includes Bucharest), Banat, and Dobrogea – covering about one-third of the country’s distribution market. Their infrastructure includes 289 transformer stations and more than 25,000 substations.
Previously operating as E-Distributie under Italy’s Enel Group, Retele Electrice transitioned to PPC ownership after a $1.4 B (€1.24 B) acquisition finalised in October 2023.
With this latest investment in Mamaia, PPC continues to reinforce its commitment to infrastructure development and enhanced service reliability for Romanian consumers.
