Namibia: The Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) has acquired two mobile substations worth $3 M (N$55 M), improving its ability to rapidly restore power during transformer failures.

NamPower Senior Engineer, Elsebi Gadney, explained that the new substations were rated at 20 MVA, offering versatile voltage ratios of 132 / 66 kV to 33 / 11 kV and 132 / 66 kV to 22 / 11 kV, respectively. These units will serve as temporary power sources during emergencies such as transformer failures, or for maintenance work.

“The substations are designed to be plug-and-play, ensuring a rapid response in cases where a transformer is urgently needed,” Gadney said.

The substations were assembled in South Africa and transported by road to Namibia, marking a significant milestone in NamPower’s operational improvements.

This acquisition adds to the existing 10 MVA mobile substation. As a symbolic gesture and to reflect their mobile nature, the new units were named ‘Rhino’ and ‘Buffalo’ to complement the existing ‘Lion’ substation.  All three units are part of NamPower’s Big Five-themed mobile fleet.
