USA, Texas/New Mexico: The Southwest Power Pool wants to build 300 miles of extra-high-voltage transmission lines in the Permian Basin in order to help the grid handle expected extreme load growth. The power pool has proposed a 765 kV project and several 500 kV projects in Texas and New Mexico to the oil-rich region.

The project could cost approximately $750 million, which is almost as much as the 2022 and 2023 ITP portfolios. This means the entire portfolio could end up costing between $2 billion and $3.5 billion. Engineering vice president Casey Cathey said the costs are only rough estimates and the final figures have not been calculated.
