England, Staffordshire: A major supergrid transformer is scheduled to arrive at National Grid’s Cellarhead substation in Staffordshire on 2 June, as part of critical maintenance to secure long-term electricity reliability.

The delivery, managed by Allelys Heavy Haulage and accompanied by a full police escort, involves a carefully coordinated transport operation. The new transformer replaces aging equipment nearing the end of its service life, forming part of routine substation upgrades.

Supergrid transformers play a vital role in the energy network by adjusting electricity voltage for safe transmission from power stations and efficient distribution to homes and businesses.

The journey began on 1 June, when the transformer travelled from Sundon, near Luton, to Uttoxeter. On 2 June, it will pass through Werrington and continue along Rownall Road into the substation.

Residents along Cellarhead Road and Rownall Road have been notified to keep the roads clear between 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm to enable safe passage of the oversized vehicle.

Jake Roche, National Grid Project Manager, noted: “We have worked closely with local authorities and our haulage team to minimise disruption. This essential upgrade will not impact electricity supplies, and noise will be limited.”

Once installed, the old transformer will be dismantled, removed in smaller parts, and fully recycled.
