Scotland, Lerwick: SSEN Transmission’s work to connect Shetland’s local electricity network to the national grid has reached a milestone with the arrival of two new transformers – the largest components in the project.

The transformers each weighing around 59 t, are key electrical components in the ongoing Gremista electricity connection project.

Once fully installed, the transformers will ensure the site’s ability to handle current and future electricity demand, helping to enable and manage the flow of energy through the substation and improving the network’s reliability and efficiency.

The two units were transported from the Lerwick Harbour’s Greenhead Base to their final location at the new Gremista Grid Supply Point (GSP).

SSEN Transmission’s Gremista to Kergord project will create a 22 km link using overhead lines and underground cables. It will connect the new Gremista GSP to the Kergord Substation, completed in 2024 as part of the Shetland HVDC link. Once finished, it will integrate Shetland’s local grid with the GB energy system, securing the islands’ electricity supply.

The Kergord-Gremista link is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
