Ukraine: Ukraine has sharply increased its imports of transformers, inductors, and chokes, with total imports reaching $338 M from January to April 2025, according to Interfax Ukraine. The majority came from China, which supplied $279 M, representing 82.5 % of total imports in this category.
This marks a 4.2-fold increase from the same period in 2024, when Chinese imports amounted to $66.1 M (48.4 %). Other suppliers included Germany with $17.4 M and Turkey with $13.9 M. In April 2025 alone, transformer-related imports were 50 % higher than in April 2024.
The rise in imports aligns with Ukraine’s efforts to rebuild its energy infrastructure, supported by initiatives like the World Bank’s RePower Ukraine project, which began delivering large transformers in October 2024.
Ukraine’s exports of similar equipment also grew, reaching $8.37 M, up from $5.64 M a year earlier. Major export destinations included Germany, Hungary, and Poland.
For all of 2024, Ukraine’s total imports of these goods more than doubled to $596.11 M, with Chinese imports increasing 2.5 times to $400.48 M.
The trends underscore Ukraine’s growing reliance on foreign equipment, particularly from China, as it restores and strengthens its power systems amid continuing recovery efforts.
