Design of distribution transformers – e-lesson #22 – The future of transformers and transformer design

    Course: Master’s level

Hosted by: Mario Salano / Master's level

In the final lesson of the Design of distribution transformers, course author Mario Salon talks about the future of transformers and transformer design. He also shares a brief overview of the entire course. The lesson is presented on the Master's level.

The 22nd lesson of the Design of Distribution Transformers course explores the future of transformers, emphasizing technological advances and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in design. Led by Mario Salano, the session examines the evolution of distribution transformers, traditionally stable technology now shifting due to renewable energy demands, smart grids, and sustainability requirements. Mario introduces Smart Transformers or Solid State Transformers (SSTs), a new technology that integrates traditional transformers with power electronics, enhancing AC voltage regulation, reactive power compensation, and energy storage integration. These smart transformers, ideal for renewable energy systems, promise greater control capabilities and efficiency in adapting to smart grid requirements. The lesson also highlights AI-driven optimization techniques, with a focus on Genetic Algorithms inspired by Darwin's evolutionary theory. Genetic Algorithms and other optimization tools, such as Swarm Intelligence and Cuckoo Search, are used to optimize transformer designs for cost, efficiency, and size. Techniques like Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) and Firefly algorithms further showcase how bio-inspired AI approaches streamline transformer design and enhance predictive accuracy.
