Design of distribution transformers – e-lesson #8: Transformers at no-load and on load

    Design of distribution transformers course - e-lesson #8 - illustration 850 x 400 px
    Course: Intermediate level

Hosted by: Mario Salano / Intermediate level

This is the eighth lesson in the Design of distribution transformers course, conducted on the Intermediate level. Here you can save your seat.

This lesson focuses on the no-load and on-load behavior of transformers, which is an important aspect of their design. The presenter, Mr. Mario Salano, explains how a simplified equivalent circuit can be used to analyze the changes in secondary voltage and efficiency under different load conditions. Vector diagrams are introduced to help visualize the relationships between voltage, current, and power factor.  The lesson covers the four main types of transformer losses: resistive, eddy current, hysteresis, and flux losses. Strategies for minimizing these losses, such as using laminated cores and high-permeability materials, are discussed. Overall, the lesson provides a deep dive into the external characteristics of transformers that designers must consider to ensure optimal performance. Understanding no-load and on-load behavior is crucial for the proper design of distribution transformers.

The lesson #8 is also the sixth lesson conducted on the Intermediate level. This time the author, Mr. Mario Salano, will explain transformers at no-load and on load. Special emphasis will be placed on the possible consequences of the green approach.

As in all of the previous and upcoming lessons of this course, here too the author’s main intention is to provide an overview of transformer design by taking into account stakeholders’ wishes and preferences.

The lesson stays available on-demand upon the live broadcasting.

    Mario Salano

Mr. Salano’s expertise in the field of power transformers comes from a well established engineering skills acquired in “Salano transformers”, renowned Italian company that manufactured line-frequency power transformers for Italian power utilities. While inheriting the company from his father, Sig. Mario Salano used his vast engineering skills and he managed to maintain the company in rough period of seventies, adding new technologies and novel approaches to traditional values and products of “Salano transformers”.

His current interests include high-efficiency distribution transformers, the impact of nonlinear loads on power transformers, novel materials for transformer cores and also high-frequency power transformers for the use in conjunction with power electronics topologies.
