Transformer Oil – e-lesson #5 – Condition monitoring of oils in transformer service

    Transformer oil course - e-lesson #5 - illustration 850 x 400
    Course: Intermediate level

    Hosted by: CS Narasimhan

This lesson provided an overview of the condition monitoring of mineral oils used in transformer service. It discussed the importance of properly filling new transformers with oil and ensuring compatibility when topping up. The lesson covered the key aging parameters to monitor, such as dielectric strength, water content, acidity, and interfacial tension, and explained how to interpret the limits defined in the IEC 60422 standard. The presentation highlighted the need to correlate and corroborate different oil parameters to assess the overall condition, and recommended actions like reconditioning or reclamation when limits are exceeded. It also mentioned upcoming revisions to the IEC standard that will impact water content monitoring. The lesson emphasized the criticality of regular oil testing and not waiting until parameters deteriorate before taking action.

    Unauthorized message

The lesson will discuss the significance of condition monitoring especially for EHV and UHV power transformers. It will deal with critical parameters that require monitoring and their significance. The limits for critical parameter set by IEC standard IEC60422-2013 will be discussed along with consequences if the limits are allowed to cross. Author will talk about the recommended actions when critical oil parameters cross the set limits.

IEC 60422 standard will be compared with IEEE 57.106-2015 standard and the key differences between the two will be discussed.

Keywords: condition monitoring, IEC60422, IEEE 57.106,2015, critical parameters, corrective actions, water, acidity, oxidation
